Crafting with DVDs and clay

Monday, January 30, 2017

Hello Folks!

A happy new year to all my readers 😊 ....I know its a lil late, we are already at the end of the month, but better late than never. Here's presenting you my first blog of the year 2017. Its a shiny piece of art and am loving it so much 😍. I hope you will too. So lets start.

I bought a round canvas. They are so fascinating. I had no clue what to make on it while buying. I went for a rectangular frame and I saw this....forgot about everything and bought the round frame 😀. I had in mind an intricate design in white over a blue background for this frame. But it didn't come out as planned. So I painted it black. After spending many days thinking what to put on it, I finally had a eureka moment. I decided to use DVD pieces and clay on it.

I started with a small sketch, preliminary idea.

Now I started pasting pieces of DVD's in a mosaic pattern. First I warmed up the DVD a little bit by placing it over the room heater. By doing this, the shiny film gets stuck on one side of the disk. The DVD is made of  two layers. You have to use a knife to crack it open. Once open, I cut the layer with shiny film on it in random way using scissors.

Now that the mosaic work is done, I started with the modeling clay, also called air dry clay. Its available in two colours: white and terracota. I had no white clay left, so I used terracota one. Then I painted it white after the clay was a little dry.

After making the desired shapes in clay and painting them in white, I glued them onto the canvas using a clear-dry-glue.

Now I made strings of the clay by rolling it over a table and pasted it on the canvas.

I had pretty difficult time painting the clay white once pasted on the canvas. So I would suggest you folks to use white clay in this scenario.

And here it is ....all finished !!! 😀😀😀

Clay floral design on canvas

Wednesday, July 15, 2015

Hola !

Am back with some more work of mine to share :)  . After making a lot of mixed media artwork involving clay, I got obsessed and made another canvas with clay. I had finished making it in January but somehow forgot about it later. But now, its all out. The paints used here are acrylic and the clay is painted in gold color.

This canvas was meant originally for a painting depicting an Indian women. I started working on it last year, but somewhere during the course, I didn't like it anymore. So I colored it all black. I had no idea what to do on it. Later I tried little horizontal strokes with green and red colors. That background looked really appealing. Then I later added gold strokes. And then I thought, now what???
And right then, clay came to rescue ;)

I looked up the internet and  found this simple floral design. I made the sketch using a pencil and then started working with the clay. As always, took small pieces of modeling clay, rolled it into a thin long string. Applied glue on the design and placed the string on it. And allowed it to dry. And after few hours of work for several days, I ended up with this. It looked very beautiful in white, but to match the background I painted the clay gold. Now it looked pretty descent.

I hope you like it.
